Cardiocore Scientist to Present at DIA Cardiovascular Safety for Diabetes Conference

Dr. Nelson Schiller Will Define Value of ECHO Testing in Anti-diabetic Clinical Trials

Washington, DC – 16.September.2009 – Cardiocore, a premier centralized cardiac testing lab, announced today that its Senior Scientist, Nelson Schiller, MD, FACC, will present at the Cardiovascular Safety and Development of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Medications: Current State of the Art and Opportunities to Advance the Science conference, along with FDA and other industry experts. The meeting will be held in Washington, DC on September 23-24, 2009.

Dr Schiller’s talk, The Value of Echocardiography for Diabetic Studies, will focus on the critical relationship between diabetes and heart failure. He will identify the importance of echocardiography (ECHO) for early detection of diabetic cardiomyopathy, and will present data related to assessment of systolic and diastolic function.

Dr. Schiller is a well known expert in the application and interpretation of echocardiography. He founded the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Echocardiography Laboratory and its Adult Congenital Heart Disease Clinic. He has played integral roles in the development of many diagnostic and treatment techniques including transesophogeal echocardiography, Doppler pulmonary pressure determination, myocardial contrast perfusion and echocardiography phase imaging for ventricular coordination.

As will be discussed at the conference, the cardiac risks associated with diabetes are well documented. According to both the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology, cardiovascular complications are the most common causes of morbidity and mortality in diabetic patients. The Framingham Heart Study has shown that the incidence of congestive cardiac failure in diabetic patients occurs irrespective of coronary artery disease or hypertension.
